Join Hands Miami Valley Tackles 40 Projects in Two Days

October 8, 2010, Dayton, Ohio - October 23, 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Make a Difference Day, the nation’s largest day of community service.  In celebration of this national initiative, on Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23, Join Hands Miami Valley – a collaboration of Cedarville University, Chaminade-Julienne High School, Five Rivers Metroparks, Sinclair Community College, University of Dayton, Volunteer Connection, and Wright State University – will employ approximately 550 volunteers to work on 40 projects throughout our community.

Twenty local agencies and organizations and the thousands they serve will benefit from these two days of volunteering including:  Aullwood Audubon Center & Farm, Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Park District, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley, City of Dayton Department of Water, Clothes that Work, Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services, Dayton Christian Center, Dayton History, Five Rivers Metroparks, Good Neighbor House, Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley, Dayton Habitat for Humanity, Homefull, Life Enrichment Center, Marianist Environmental Education Center, Tecumseh Council BSA, Project Read, Wright State University, and Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center.

This year’s volunteer base comes primarily from local companies including:  Cedarville University, Chaminade-Julienne High School, GE Money, Spring Valley Academy, Sinclair Community College, University of Dayton, University of Phoenix, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, WilmerHale, and Wright State University. These volunteers will help with such functions as cleaning and organizing, event preparation and participation, senior and youth social interaction, construction, garden and farm work. 

In past years, Join Hands Miami Valley has been recognized with an “Outstanding Project Award” by Make a Difference Day.  Nationally, Make a Difference Day is sponsored by USA WEEKEND and HandsOn Network, a business unit of Points of Light Institute. 

A program of United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, Volunteer Connection is the local volunteer center for Montgomery, Greene, and Preble Counties.  The program links people with opportunities to serve and engages in activities that build the capacity for effective local volunteering including participation in initiatives that mobilize all ages, ethnicities, and genders.  More information can be found at www.volunteerdayton.org.

United Way of the Greater Dayton Area supports local health and human service programs provided by 76 Partner Agencies in Montgomery, Greene, and Preble Counties.
