Community Assessment
Health and Human Service Needs in the Greater Dayton Area

Before we can begin to make a positive impact on our community, we must first understand both the community's needs and the resources available to meet those needs.  The Community Assessment was developed by both United Way staff and numerous community leaders to take a detailed look at the health and human service needs in Montgomery, Greene and Preble Counties.  Their findings shaped United Way's 2005-2008 allocations process and provide a wealth of information to help facilitate effective community planning in the Greater Dayton Area.

United Way of the Greater Dayton Area continues to update the assessment in order to understand our community's emerging needs and align our work and initiatives to meet those needs.  Whether you work for a nonprofit organization, are involved in community planning efforts, or are just curious about the characteristics of your own neighborhood, the Assessment is a vital resource to help us build a stronger community.

Impact Areas

United Way is committed to ensuring that your dollars go towards addressing the Miami Valley's most critical health and human service priorities in an efficient and effective manner. Through a process that involves more than one hundred local volunteers, United Way directs funds to Partner Agency programs that have demonstrated success in one of three Impact Areas: Education, Income, and Health.

Education

Supportive communities, effective schools, and strong families are key partners in the successful education of a child from pre-K through adulthood.  We are committed to increasing access to quality early care as well as building support for area youth throughout their educational pursuits.  We work with educators, legislators, and community organizations to develop programs that will make for better, more productive lives for area youth and will ultimately make a stronger community for us all.
Income

United Way works to meet people’s basic needs while giving them the skills necessary to be financially stable.  We partner with businesses, local government, and agencies to connect members of our community with services such as job re-training, foreclosure prevention, and emergency food and shelter, to help set them on the path toward financial independence.  When we build a trained and reliable workforce, we keep and attract businesses, improving the financial conditions for our entire community.

Health

Health impacts every aspect of daily life.  A child living in a violent home is unable to concentrate in school.  Families can be overwhelmed by decisions and expenses when a member is diagnosed with a chronic illness or disability.  Seniors on a fixed income can face the choice of affording food or medicine.  United Way works to ensure that residents in our three-county area have access to affordable quality care and supportive services so they can lead safe, healthy, rewarding lives and remain viable, contributing members to our communities.
