Press Release
Board Decides Autonomy Best for Local United Way

Dayton, OH, Monday, August 3, 2009
- United Way of the Greater Dayton Area announced today that the organization will not proceed with a proposed merger that has been under consideration by four independent United Ways serving the Dayton area, greater Cincinnati, Warren County, and Butler County.

According to Board Chair Gary Auman, a compelling business case had not been made to move forward with a merger at this time.  “While elements of the proposed plan were appealing, the Board felt too many major issues remain unresolved,” he said.

“Given the challenging economy, we felt that the merger warranted serious exploration,” Auman said.  “Meeting immediate needs in our community and finding long-term solutions through our caring work with our Partner Agencies are our utmost concerns.”

“After careful consideration of the plan and stakeholder feedback, our volunteers were not convinced that the proposal laid out the best path to follow right now to address the unique challenges Dayton faces,” Auman explained.

“Our volunteers and staff gained a great deal from being a part of this discussion,” Auman said.  “We wish to continue to learn from and collaborate with our neighboring United Ways.  Even if cost savings may not be significant, we can all benefit from sharing best practices.”

“The Board’s decision was a vote of confidence in Dayton,” said Auman.  “We believe our community has the capacity to replace the losses caused by the dramatic shifts in our economy.  With this Board decision we can guarantee that the money raised in the campaign will remain in our community to support local agencies and programs."

“Now that the Board has eliminated any doubt that our community may have had, we know the Dayton community will come together to restore the funding needed to help the thousands of children, families and individuals that United Way partner agencies touch by contributing generously to the 2009 campaign,” said United Way President Allen Elijah.  “We are a very caring community, and we believe our community will step up generously to help one another in this time of increased need.”
